Научные интересы: Кулаков И.Ю. является руководителем коллектива Лаборатории сейсмической томографии ИНГГ СО РАН, в которой выполняется полный цикл сейсмологических работ от установки сейсмических сетей и разработки алгоритмов томографии до построения томографических моделей по реальным данным и их интерпретации. В последние 5 лет И.Ю. Кулаковым с соавторами были выполнены работы по множеству самых разных геологических объектов, таких как активные и древние вулканы, разломные зоны, области коллизии и субдукциии. Помимо уже существующего в течение более 10 лет алгоритма пассивной томографии LOTOS, в течение последних пяти лет под руководством И.Ю. Кулакова были разработаны отдельные его модификации, позволяющие выявлять анизотропию, затухание и изменения во времени. Кроме этого, И.Ю. Кулаковым был создан алгоритм томографии для инверсии по поверхностно-волновым данным, полученным в результате корреляции сейсмического шума. Все эти алгоритмы прошли апробацию на реальных данных, результаты чего опубликованы в высокорейтинговых журналах.

И.Ю. Кулаков является одним из ведущих специалистов в мире по изучению строения магматических систем под вулканами. Под его руководством в течение последних пяти лет опубликованы десятки работ по различным вулканам мира в ведущих мировых изданиях. И.Ю. Кулаков был инициатором установки временных сетей сейсмических станций на активных вулканах Камчатки, благодаря чему в последние годы получены уникальные данные по вулканам Авачинский, Горелый, Ключевской и Толбачик.

В течение последних пяти лет И.Ю. Кулаков руководил инициативным проектом РНФ 14-17-00430, который оказался весьма продуктивным по количеству и качеству публикаций (более 35 статей за 5 лет). Кроме того, И.Ю. Кулаков руководил рядом проектов РФФИ, включая два двухгодичных российско-индийских проекта с теми же партнерами, с которыми планируется работать сейчас. Помимо этого, И.Ю. Кулаков является руководителем Интеграционного проекта СО РАН и базового проекта лаборатории, которую он возглавляет.

И.Ю. Кулаков ведет активную образовательную деятельность. В Новосибирском государственном университете, в течение 7 лет ведет обязательный курс «Сейсмическая томография». Несколько раз он приглашался в зарубежные университеты для проведения курса лекций (например, KSU в Риаде, Саудовская Аравия; Колумбийский национальный университет, Богота, Колумбия). Помимо этого, он постоянно проводит научно-популярные лекции в школах, на телевидении и других публичных местах. И.Ю. Кулаков из года в год является руководителем нескольких работ на уровнях бакалавриата, магистратуры и аспирантуры.
