A.V. Ivanov is a specialist in the field of radioisotope dating and geochemistry of volcanic rocks; he develops new techniques for elemental and isotopic analysis using them in different areas of the Earth sciences. He studied volcanism of Africa, Australia, China, Kamchatka, Mongolia and Siberia, dated the investigated volcanic rocks, and determined microelement concentrations using modern analytical techniques in a number of foreign laboratories. He estimated the spatiotemporal characteristics of the development of volcanism in the East Africa and southern Siberia, showing similarities in the evolution of the East African and Baikal rift systems and a role of deep-seated thermal processes and tectonics.
