М.Г. Леонов занимается исследованиями геологии флиша, меланжей и олистостромов на Кавказе, он участвовал в экспедициях в высокогорном Тянь-Шане и Памире. Им установлено, что структура покровно-складчатых областей является результатом интерференции различных геодинамических режимов; выявлена новая категория внутриплитных структур – внутрибассейновые коллизионные швы; сформулировано понятие о релаксационном типе метаморфизма. М.Г. Леонов создал новое научное направление в изучении тектоники и геодинамики консолидированной коры различных геоструктур.
